Trap shooting with semi-auto shotguns gets you bigger scores, as compared to the scores when the over-under ones are used. So the question is, why do people not use them more? They are not that popular now, even though they impart less recoil on the shoulder.
What is a Semi-Auto?
Semi-automatics have never been popular in Britain or on the Continent for trap shooting, and that will probably never change. With one or two notable exceptions there are few European gun makers producing semi-autos in Trap configuration. Instead their production is geared to guns for rough shooting, pigeon shooting, wildfowling and sporting – a few of which sometimes find their way onto the skeet range.
There were certainly more semi-autos used in competitions during the 1960s and 1970s but the better balance and reliability of the over-under took a grip, and it has never let go. Yes, reduced recoil is a powerful incentive to use a semi-auto shotgun but the guns habit of ejecting spent shells in the direction of another shooter awaiting his turn has proven to be somewhat off-putting.
Easy Use
It’s a lot easier to get that triple with a semi-auto than any two shot scattergun. And with the clear success that was achieved by the Remington, Baretta and Browning gas-operated semi-autos, there are adequately numbered options that are highly capable of pleasing most consumers, especially the loyal ones.
Anyone with any interest in scattergun types of shooting sports should be able to spot some modernized semi-autos that are actually worthy of their consideration.
Beretta has addressed that particular issue with its new UGB 25Xcel in that empty cases now eject through the bottom of the receiver and fall directly to the floor.
Disadvantages
One disadvantage associated with the use of semi-autos has been reliability and foolproof function. However, it has become less of a problem over the past decade or two. Some of most commonly used types are the Benelli Super Black Eagle as well as the Baretta Xtrema. Both have widely increased the bar that measures reliability.
These are the shotguns that have so frequently taken away the huge advantage that pump guns once had, especially those with properly functioning pumps.
This kind of reliability was not always the hallmark of a certain type of semi-auto, especially when steel shot was introduced and certain shot-shell companies tried to develop a set of suitable powders that was especially intended for steel shot loads.
Today, steel loads as well as other non-toxics are simply great in comparison to early loads. But, shot shells made of steel were once a real problem for autoloaders.
