US Open Trap Shooting Tournaments
Trap shooting is probably the most popular gun sports in the U.S. Today. U.S. Open trap shooting tournaments are governed by the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA). It is one of the largest shooting organizations in the world.
The American Trapshooting Association
If you want to join competitions you have to register with the ATA. All Gun clubs in North America hold tournaments in accordance with the rules of ATA. The scores in this Gun Club contests are recorded and kept at the ATA headquarters. The scores tally for all the tournaments are used for classifying and handicapping shooters.
In shooting opens registered with the ATA, targets are ruled to be thrown at between 48 to 52 yards with heights of 8 to 12 ft and about 10 yards from the actual trap. Shooters are positioned 16 yards from trap houses.
A few Trap Shooting Tournaments
Every club in all of North America holds their own shooting tournaments. These tournaments last from 3 to 5 days each. Here are a few of the famous ones:
The 42nd Annual Intercollegiate Clay Target National Championships is a 4 day event. This year it was held at the US National Shooting Complex. It is a collegiate contest held to foster healthy competition among participating Texan Universities.
Southwestern Grand American. The south-western Grand American is a tournament held by the coalition of all gun clubs in the south west. It is a prelude, a sort of qualifier for those attending the Grand American Trap Shooting Championships.
Westward there is the Stagecoach Days @ Banning Sportsman Club. Its a 3 day charity tournament held just outside Los Angeles.
The Mother of All Tournaments
The ATA holds several mini Grand Americans, and other US Open Trap Shooting Tournaments which leads up to the mother of all tournaments.
Every August the Amateur Trapshooting Association holds the Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships. For decades it was held in Vandalia Ohio, until it was moved to a bigger stadium at Sparta Illinois; the World Shooting and Recreational Complex. This thirteen day event attracts about 6,000 shooters and is said to be the largest tournament in whole world. Like any other US Open Trap Shooting Tournaments the Grand Americans rules and regulations are sanctioned and governed by the American Trap Shooting Association.
