Trap Shooting versus Sporting Clay

Trap shooting and sporting clay are often confused with one another. However, the only similarity they have is that both are types of shotgun sports used by hunters for training. They are therefore useful in refining a hunter’s skill but each offer a distinctive approach to the sport.

Origin

The most basic difference between trap shooting and sporting clay is the origin of the corresponding sport. Trapshooting first developed during the mid-18th century in England. During the early years of the sport, live pigeons were used as targets. While sporting clays originated in the same place, it was created in the late 19th century, much later than trap shooting.

Stations

The next major difference between trap shooting and sporting clay would have to be the number of stations used for the respective sports. In trap shooting, there are a total of five stations that are located at a 16-yard difference apart from each other. Each trap shooter gets 5 attempts for each station but you will only get a single shot for each station in a given round.

In the case of sporting clays, the shooter must move from one station to another, just like in the sports of golf. The distance for each shooting station is not uniform, while you can take 5 to 10 shots for each station.

Target Sizes

The next difference between both shotgun sports comes in terms of the target size. In a conventional trap shooting sport, the target is approximately 109mm in diameter. However, sporting clays have substituted those conventional target sizes with a smaller one, or in some cases targets are differently shaped from one another. Hence, sporting clays are more challenging, if one were to consider the target size and shape since it requires more variety in your shooting approach.

Target Flight

In trap shooting, players can randomly target their shots left, right, or straight. But in the case of sporting clays, you must attempt to mimic the flight of game birds, thus allowing your shot to go straight up. Also, you need to send each shot away from the shooter, either sideways or let it bounce off on the ground.

Scoring

The scoring system for the trap shooting and sporting clay is similar. Whenever you manage to hit, it is marked with an X. Meanwhile, a miss is marked with O. There are 25 shots provided for a round of trap shooting, while sporting clays offer 50 shots.
