The Fish Surfboard: What Is It and Should You Use It?

In the world of surfing, you will find that there are different types of surfboards that are being used by surfers today. You will hear about shortboards, longboards, foamboards, and funboards to name a few. Another type of surfboard that you will hear about in the world of surfing is the fish surfboard.

What exactly is the fish surfboard and what are its features in terms of performance?

First of all, fish surfboards have been around since the 1960’s. Up until today, fish surfboards are still being used by a lot of surfers saving for the fact that the basic styling of the board have changed over the past 40 years. Fish surfboards are notoriously known as fun board for the intermediate and expert surfers because of the features it offer.

The retro fish surfboard, which you will still see today, is a throwback to the board that came out during the 60’s and 70’s. And, you will find that there is a good reason why this particular design is still popular today.

Basically, the fish surfboards of the 60s were originally designed as kneeboards as well as surfboards. It rapidly gained popularity among a lot of surfers and it quickly spread by word of mouth. It basically became the surfboard of the 70’s.

Because fish surfboards are light to carry around and are great for small to medium waves, it retained its popularity even today. Because of this simple feature, it became an all around fun board for intermediate to advanced surfers.

One aspect of the fish surfboard that hasn’t changed is that they were created with a fish-like shape. It has a sharp nose and a swallow tail. These boards are shorter and wider than your usual longboards and Mini-Mal. And, like your shortboards, beginners should not attempt to learn surfing with a fish surfboard. This is because the shortened design of these boards tends to ride flat on the wave and it really isn’t easy to surf vertically with it. Unless you are an advanced surfer who have mastered the basics of surfing, you shouldn’t attempt to surf in this surfboard as you will only end up getting more wipe outs and more frustration.

The fish surfboard is ideal for medium sized waves. They can go at high speeds and allow you to do some extreme maneuvers with it. Although this type of surfboard is not for the newbie in surfing, this is a great board to practice on to move on to shorter boards. They are a lot of fun even on small to medium sized waves and they can surely provide you with speed and maneuverability and try different tricks.

These are the basics of the fish surfboard. Always remember that this kind of surfboard is only for experienced surfers. If you are a beginner and you still haven’t mastered the basics of surfing, you may want to stick with your Mini-Mal or longboard.
