The first type of surfboard that you should know about is the shortboard or also known as thruster. This is what professional and expert surfers use because of its high maneuverability. The gun is another type of surfboard that you should know about. It is long, narrow and pointy at the nose and tail. Designed for maximum rail contact, these surfboards are great for big wave surfers and for powerful and steep waves. Because of its shape, they are easier to use when paddling out and are easier to control in steeper waves.
Another type of surfboard is the longboard. Also known as the cruiser or log, longboards are over 8 to 9 feet long. It has a rounded nose and it offers maximum stability in the water, ease of paddling, and ease in catching waves. The tradeoff is that longboards are not that good in maneuvering or shredding. This type of surfboard is perfect for beginners who need maximum stability in surfboards in order for them to stand and learn the basics of surfing.
You have the Mini-Mal or Malibu surfboard. Similar to the longboard in its shape and riding characteristics, the only difference is that its slightly shorter in length and has a slimmer width and tail, which will allow sharper turns.
The funboard is another type of surfboard that you should know about. It offers the paddling ease of a longboard and the turning ability of the shortboard. They are great for surfing in almost all conditions and are recommended for less experienced surfers.
