Choosing the Perfect Surfboard Fins: Experimenting With Speed and Maneuverability

As a surfer, you need to remember that choosing the right fins for your surfboard is a very important part of choosing process for your first board. You need to keep in mind that there are many types of surfboard fins to choose from and each fin characteristics can greatly affect the way you ride the waves with your surfboard.

Always keep in mind that when choosing the type of fin system that you need for your surfboard, the characteristics as well as the brand of the fin system are very important.

Today, most surfboards come with removable fins as opposed to glassed-in fins. However, you need to remember that most brands do not have cross compatible boxes, which means that the fins you want may not fit on your surfboard if the fins are manufactured by a different company from the corporation that manufactured your existing surfboard.

This is why it is important to choose carefully the system you want as it will affect all your future fin choices for your surfboard.

Here are some of the fin characteristics that you need to remember in order for you to know what kind of fin system you want for your surfboard.

The depth is the maximum height of the fin when you measure it from the bottom surface of the board to the top of the tip of the fin. With more depth, the surfboard increases its hold but it will make it harder for you to turn. On tri-fins, a 3-4 inch depth is the standard and single fins will have a depth of nine inches, which is common in longboards.

The template is basically just your fin outline. The base talks about the length of the fin where it joins the surfboard. By increasing the length, it will be able to give you more forward drive but as it increases, it will make it harder for you to turn. The foil talks about the horizontal curve of the fin. The rake is the distance between the trailing edge of the fin base to the fin tip. Increasing the rake will mean it will increase traction. The tip is the tip third of the fin. With more tip, it will mean more hold.

The flex of the fin is also very important. Stiffer fins are faster but it is harder for you to turn. Flexible fins are more maneuverable but it sacrifices speed if it increases in flexibility.

These are the characteristics of the surfboard fins that you have to remember. By getting the proper mix that you want for your surfboard, you will be able to get the type of surfing that you want. Whether it is speed that you want or maneuverability, or a mix of both, you will be able to achieve these things by just manipulating the fins of your surfboard.
