Tennis Drills for Beginners

There are some tactical tennis drills for beginners that will help to improve the players skill and make the person a better player. Some of these drills include ways to develop decision making skills, ball control and spin. You can make use of the information on simple drills in this article to progress to the more complex drills for improved consistency in playing a variety of ground strokes.

We will now go over some of the more common drills that will help players enhance their tennis playing skills.

In long cross court training, players rally (send the ball back and forth), playing from the deuce side of their court. A conscious effort is made to keep the ball over the service line at all times. Each rally generally lasts anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes, and then players change to the advantage side of their court to repeat the rallying.

Next we have the drill that focuses on aiming right this is actually a fun way for beginners to concentrate on aiming forehands, backhands, ground-strokes and volleys. Consistency of shots, power, spin, direction and depth are the 5 main attributes that a tennis player needs to develop. It is no exaggeration to say that direction is probably the most important and challenging of all. It is very motivating for a player to have the ball go where you intended it to.

With the different levels of drills, beginners are thrilled at the challenge present in working their way through the various levels that become increasingly difficult. You have drills to improve agility and speed, teaching the player to hit on the run. There is also a drill to focus on a rather neglected shot, the service return shot.

Then you have consistency drills that help the beginner make the move from simply knocking the ball about to actually being able to sustain a rally. Hitting consistent forehands and backhands as well as volleys and ground-strokes is what helps a player stay in the game.

When a player is confidently able to handle the beginner drills, it is time to move to the intermediate level drills. These offer an even greater challenge and will keep the player engaged in exciting play for a long time.
