Hockey Movies, Anyone?
What is an NHL Stanley Cup night without reminiscing a good hockey film? Here are some random hockey films which could accompany you while waiting for the playoffs.
* King of Hockey (1936)
It was during the hockey season of 1936-1937, when the King of Hockey was released. In the movie, Gabby Dugan (played by Dick Purcell) is a hockey champ whose career was ended with a game-fixing scandal. He eventually ended up blind because of a blow in the head. Gabby underwent operation to restore sight, made a comeback and redeemed his reputation.
* Face Off (1971)
It is a love story on ice. Okay, not really on ice. The lady love is a pop singer, while the ice hockey player is a rookie with the Leafs. Their two worlds can be bridged by love. Or will they just pull each other in their own pits?
* Youngblood (1986)
A movie starred by big names Robe Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and Keanu Reeves. Dean Youngblood is a hockey player trying to get into the NHL. Youngblood, his coaches said, lack grit and toughness that would take him to the professional league. Aside from hockey, it also focuses on the relationship with the Coach’s daughter.
* Sudden Death (1995)
The Game 7 Stanley Cup Playoffs is blowing up! The game is the center of a terrorist act. And Jean Claude Van Damme would save the game and the whole arena. If you are up to NHL players appearing in the movie and some cool action scenes, then this is the right one for you.
* Mighty Ducks
Who would forget the Mighty Ducks and the two sequels. It may have motivated a lot of children to play hockey. This shows a lot of funny moments by the kids and at the same time revolves around a good story. This is one of the most loved sport movies from Disney.
* Mystery, Alaska (1999)
One of the best hockey movies, it shows how a small town team can take a giant of a team on a frozen pond. It shows how a small town team was able to reached heights and compete against New York Rangers. It was not a Cinderella story, no magic wands to do the transformation. It was tryouts, hard work, team work and even competition, the teams growth is followed in the story.
* Miracle
Another great hockey movie based on the true story of the 1980 Olympic hockey team. Some say it is an accurate representation of what hockey is all about. Kurt Russell stars as hockey legend and genius Herb Brooks when he led the 1980 team to victory against the Russian squad.
Start picking your hockey movie, get the popcorn going.
