Wakeboarding: The Fins Have It!

If more people realized from the beginning what a difference the style of fins makes on the bottom of wakeboards, they may pay more attention. In fact, fins on the underside of the board make a great deal of difference as to how much you’ll enjoy your wakeboarding experience. So why sell your experience short? It is best to learn as much as you can with regard to different fin styles and how they affect your performance within the water.

First, as a rule of thumb the closer fins are to the center of the board, the quicker the board releases from the wake. There are many different styles of wakeboard fins and here is how they affect performance within the water.

1. Long fins perform about as well as a short fin with a long base. This is due to the fact they have about the same degree of surface area. The long fins provide the rider with easier release. Also the board will feel similar to a snowboard when addressing the water. The contact with the water has a flat easy riding feel to it. Also, the long fin reportedly is more durable when engaging ramps.

2. Molded fins are channels incorporated into the board and act in the same capacity as fins. They are durable as far as addressing ramps. They are described as slippery, however most wakeboards come with a middle fin that is removable.

3. If you choose multiple fins, the set-up allows for optimum hold and forcefulness through the wake.

4. The canted side fins lean outward and at an angle. These fins do not respond to the water as well as other fins when the board is traveling flat on the water. However, the more you lean toward the edge the more the board catches hold of the water. The inner fin plunges while the outside fin creates lift. This provides you with plenty of leverage. These are the fins you use for nose or tail presses.

5. Cupped side fins basically accomplish the same result as the canted fins with the difference being there is more of a forward-backward feel. You can use the seemingly smaller fins however and still receive the same degree of hold as you would with larger fins. This is because there is a larger surface portion on the side of the fin where it is cupped. Also things aren’t always what they seem: the fins appear smaller than their actual size.

6. There are some boards available without any fins for those who prefer them.

In order to achieve the level of performance you desire when wakeboarding it’s important to consider the fins incorporated into the board’s design. In so doing, you may enjoy a better overall wakeboarding experience.
