Wakeboarding Techniques

People wishing to make wakeboarding their sport are going to find first and foremost there is a new world of words and references for this sport. One important basic to start with is defining the terms heelside and toeside. In this way, you’ll be able to better grasp what is required within the various stunts you’ll perform during wakeboarding.

In fact the language seems nearly foreign at first until you become more familiar with it. This is also true with other sports such as snowboarding and surfing. Until you get used to the activity, there are some terms that will not make a whole lot of sense. In this light, it is advised you hire a certified or qualified wakeboarding instructor. Also read as much as you can about the sport. Slowly but surely all the terms come into play and you will increase your understanding as well as your knowledge.

In order to provide you with a heads up, here are two basic terms and some description of various stunts performed by the wakeboarder. The word heelside edge refers to a rider heading towards the wake with his or her front facing the boat. When your front faces away from the boat then the term to describe it is: toeside edge. A beginner generally practices wakeboarding using a heelside edge approach. An individual with advanced wakeboarding skills will use both heelside edge and toeside edge in order to address the wake.

The following are a number of techniques used in wakeboarding:

1. One technique is referred to as the Tsunami flip. Within this technique the wakeboarder will jump high and then perform a backflip. However, in the midst of his or her performance, he or she lets go of the rope and takes hold of it again, finishing the flip and making a landing.

2. In the Raley, the wakeboarder hits the wake allowing the body to swing back, ascending overhead and in alignment with the water. The wakeboarder next will swing his or her body and board downward, landing on the wake’s other side.

3. The butter slide is performed by approaching the wake, snapping the board sideways and then sliding onto the wake’s surface.

There are many more techniques and a great deal to learn when taking up wakeboarding. However, the sport addresses the acrobat within; and you’ll have sensational fun performing the stunts which are associated with this extreme water sport.
