Stunt Pogo: A Sport Sure to Take You to New Heights!
Pogo may be defined as the act of performing various stunts using a pogo stick. Pogo has been around for a while; however some of the newer versions of the pogo stick provide athletes and performers the ability to attain heights of up to six feet. Further, participants now perform stunts in competitions that include acrobatic feats such as front flips, full twist back flips, and side flips.
Since persons using the newer version of the sport’s pogo sticks have become such acrobatic performers the activity of stunt pogo is now being held on a competitive level. The world championship of the sport is referred to as Pogopalooza. The world competition was first created by Dan Brown and the first championship was held in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2004.
Several disciplines with respect to stunt pogo are evaluated during the world championship event. Examples include:
* The highest jump;
* The most jumps per minute; and
* The least jumps per minute.
You may wonder why the fewest jumps per minute are evaluated. You achieve the fewest jumps by jumping as high as possible. Therefore, the pogo jumper jumping highest is not able to jump as often as the participant who isn’t able to jump as high. Additionally, competitive participants are involved in performing acrobatic stunts such as the ice pick stall.
During Pogopalooza (event 5) the world record for the high jump was broken. The previous record was six feet and it was held by thirty-seven year old Brian Spencer. However, fifteen year old Daniel Mahoney broke Brian Spencer’s record by jumping seven feet, eight inches.
Event Six of Pogopalooza was held in 2009 in Schenley Plaza in the city of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). The competition drew sixty participants from twenty-three states as well as Canada and Great Britain. The highest jump accomplished was an impressive eight feet, six inches.
Stunt Pogo as a sport is compared to sports such as skateboarding within the category of extreme sports. Creation of the sport of stunt pogo is attributable to David Armstrong who initiated the virtual community referred to as xpogo. The site has been effective in bringing together pogo players on an international basis. Since the inception of the site, the degree of difficulty of the pogo stunts has increased. Part of this (again) has to do with the modern pogo sticks that allow participants to jump, on average, as high as six feet. And, again, the new heights have made it possible to more easily perform the associated stunts. If you believe you have gymnastic and acrobatic flair, you may wish to give stunt pogo a try.
