Woodpecker Calls

Filed under: Game Calls for Hunting

The use of woodpecker calls for hunting offers its own set of challenges, especially with a wide range of woodpecker species out there. Hence, one of the secrets to a successful woodpecker hunting expedition is to use the right call for the intended species of bird. You can get more information below to learn about distinct sounds that you need to produce and know about before setting out to hunt them.

Downy Woodpecker Call

This particular species of woodpecker produces some sort of a ticking sound with a slight tapping noise to it. A downy woodpecker repeats this sound often when subjected to extreme levels of agitation due to the presence of a predator, or something threatening to invade its territory. You can elicit response from other birds of the same specis when using this particular woodpecker call.

Hairy Woodpecker Call

This type of call is characterized by a loud, often emphatic noise. Unlike the Downy woodpecker that tends to trail off as it speeds up, this one lacks that same quality of sound. This is often produced when two woodpeckers, male and female, are in the mating process. Hence, it might be a good way to attract woodpeckers and trick them into the presence of another bird of the opposite sex.

Three-toed Woodpecker Call

This one has the same similar ticking tune as the downy woodpecker, although this pitch is slightly lower on this one. This is usually produced by male woodpeckers when they are foraging on a burnt tree in the forest.

Northern Flicker Woodpecker Call

For this species, you can use a territorial type of woodpecker call that comes with a laughing and long note to it. You can also use an alarm type of call for attracting these species of birds in an effort to make contact with similar birds. This has been proven to be really effective in drawing in birds or at least attracting them within your hunting range.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker Call

This species of woodpeckers often produce calls whenever they are resting on a nest hole. To be specific, this sound is produced by a male bird. There are several other variations to this type of woodpecker calls, such as cow call, rattle-like call, or some other shorter calls to get these birds to notice.

Pileated Woodpecker Call

For this one, the call produced sounds like cu-cu-cu-cu and is a somewhat excited kind of noise. You can also use this same kind of woodpecker call on some other species of birds to see if you can generate the same response.
