What Happens During a Mud Treatment?
When the body suffers physical trauma of any kind, the scars go deep. We know that each body is unique in its ability to heal from trauma or illness, some more quickly than others. Mud has therapeutic properties that have been known to man for thousands of years. A study of history through the ages will show that it has been used to cure, alleviate and prevent a variety of ailments and skin conditions.
Medical peat is another term for mud that is taken from peat bogs that were formed at the end of the last known ice age. This mud has an abundance of minerals, trace minerals and biologically active substances. When these elements penetrate the skin they aid in the circulation of blood and cell regeneration processes. They also assist in detoxification of waste from the body and collagen production.
But what can you expect to happen during a typical mud treatment session at a day spa? Each type of mud has different properties and content based on the geological area from which it is harvested. Mud treatment is an essential part of spa therapies; you could even say it is the cornerstone of spa therapies. Each type of mud has its own specific qualities. Countries like the Czech Republic have a very ancient history of spas and are noted for the excellent quality of the mud treatments they offer.
Mud taken from near thermal waters that are naturally rich in mineral salts, gases and iodine, pass these properties on to the soil they flow into. In fact, thermal waters pass on a considerable amount of curative properties to the mud in surrounding areas.
A traditional mud treatment begins with a shower to prepare the body for immersion in the mud. A warm shower relaxes the body and helps to open up the pores.
After the shower, you will be assisted to a mud bath where the temperature of the mud is maintained at around 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The mud itself is a rich mixture that is thick and warm. Once you step into the tub you need to position your body in a way that immerses it to the fullest possible extent. Any uncovered places on the body will be covered over by the person in attendance. The immersion can last anywhere from 10 minutes to more depending on the type of mud used and the spas process.
You will feel a sense of weightlessness, but it is nothing to worry about. The body does not actually settle at the bottom of the tub as you would be expecting it to do. As the muscles start to relax, you will feel the weightless sensation settle over you. Be prepared for the feeling of drowsiness that may sweep over you. This is a result of the combination of the muds soothing properties, the warmth and the steamy environment.
Another thing that you should be prepared for is the possible difficulty you may face when getting out of the tub. Your entire body is encased in mud that is sticky and heavy. You may feel like you are doing a spot of weightlifting when alighting from the tub! Dont be worried, the attendant will be on hand to help you.
The next step in the process is to take your second shower. This will be a much longer one than your first was. The mud has to be removed and you may have to even scrape off the viscous coating from your body.
After the shower you will take a 15 minute (approximate) mineral bath. The hot air jets will alternatively soothe, massage and energize the body. The mineral bath will continue the mud treatments therapeutic work.
From here you go into a steam room for a steam bath. This is a room filled with natural steam and moist heat. This step in the process is generally optional, but should be taken. The room will often have the scent of aromatherapy oils to enhance the sense of relaxation.
In the final stage of the mud treatment is in a private room where clean, dry blankets are wrapped round the body to allow it to cool down.
To round off the process nicely a massage is a must. Your body is relaxed and loose and this is the ideal time for a massage.
