What Happens During a Massage

The instinctive nature of humans to rub pain away has ensured that massages have existed for as long as there were people. According to Hindu writings dating back to the 1800s BC, massage therapy was used to help with sleeping, weight reduction, fatigue and relaxation. Massages were combined with bathing in the common interest of hygiene. Chinese literature from 3000 BC shows that massage was part of the package to enjoy complete well being. As early as 300 BC the Greeks used massages as part of their daily routine, and to relieve pain and fatigue.

The history of massage reveals all too clearly how the ancient healing practice has managed to survive through the ages. Massage therapy is probably one of the oldest of all forms of medical treatment. China records the earliest mention of it as a recommendation for treating specific ailments. In India, Ayurvedic medicine prescribes massage therapy for various medical conditions. Hippocrates instructed doctors on the benefits of rubbing to relieve pain.

This article will detail what happens during a massage for a better understanding of the process. All through the years massage has been considered a natural healing therapy. While in the West the practice of massage waxed and waned, it was revived in the 1960s as the interest in natural healing gained new importance. It is one of the most popular methods of dealing with stress and has become a mainstream method to deal with stress related health problems in the new age.

The Swedish massage is considered one of the most common and popular forms of professional massage that is available in the US. It was originally developed as a form of physical therapy to help people with muscular and circulatory problems.

The standard Swedish massage, which is one of the most popular forms of massage, involves the use of 5 steps for each body part. First you have effleurage which is the application of oils or lotions in long strokes to relax the muscles. Next we have petrissage, where the muscles are kneaded and worked over. Then you have friction, which heats the muscles, stimulating blood circulation. Tapotement is the next step and consists of slapping or chopping lightly at the muscles. The last step is the soft nerve stroke by which muscles and skin are relaxed and stimulated.

Before you actually get a massage, you will need to provide basic information on general health to the therapist. You will also have to state why you need a massage and fill out a form. Therapists will be able to guide you on your choice of massage based on the information you provide. Therapist in most states are licensed or registered; a license is issued only when the therapist completes is or her training.

In day spas, massages are done in a quiet, private room with soft lighting. Aromatherapy by way of candles or heated oils helps with the relaxation. The table is a padded one covered with a clean sheet and the patient is required to either lie face down or face up on the table. The table will have a cushioned area shaped like a doughnut for you to rest your face.

Therapists will need access to bare skin to apply oils and work the muscles. Day spas and other professional massage centers require the person to disrobe and lie face down on the table with a sheet covering the body. The therapist works on the bare back area. Work on the buttock area is generally done through the sheet. Any work done on the neck and chest area is also done under the sheet.

To prepare for the full body massage, you will be required to shower before the massage begins. Professional therapists will disinfect their hands when they touch your hair or feet. After the massage, you will need to shower to remove the lotions or oils used during the massage.

The therapist will work on individual sections of the body, rubbing, kneading, stroking, etc. as they think best for your muscles. Your job is to stay relaxed and let the therapist do the job.

Massage is a very relaxing form of physical therapy and the main purpose is to release oxygen into the blood stream and get rid of toxins in the body.
