Trap shooting, also known as clay-pigeon shooting or down-the-line shooting, is a sport in which the participants use shotguns for shooting at clay targets which are shaped as saucers. These are flung into the air from a spring device called a trap.

The sport has been established as a replacement for a particular shooting game wherein the targets were live pigeons. Indeed, one of the terms or names given to the targets made of clay that are being generally used in trap shooting games is the term clay pigeons.
