Early 18th Century
It is believed that the sport of bass fishing was born at around the early 18th century, around 1769, give or take a few years. It all started when a person named Onesimus Ustonson had developed and introduced to the angling world his different types of multiplying reels. Anglers, and other people who were very much into fishing, were all hooked on Ustonsons new reels.
Mid 1800’s
During the mid 1800’s, over a century after Ustonson had introduced his reels, artificial lures were then designed and created to be used for bass fishing. These new devices, one of which is a level wind device, took on the shape of an artificial fly. These artificial lures were actually designed based on existing fly patterns from salmon and trout flies. During this period, it was the sustenance anglers who use to fish for bass, and they did so for sustenance using live bait and poles instead of the artificial lures.
Wealthy sports anglers were more focused on fishing for salmon and trout, while some fly fishermen were content on fishing for smallmouth bass. As new and improved artificial lures and heavier spinner lures and fly lures were developed, more and more anglers began using these lures instead of using live bait. The trend became clear that these lures, which are specifically designed to fish for bass, are the way to go in the sport. These new lures have influenced the development of other fishing equipments and gears, though during this time, only casting rods and reels were available.
1900’s
More developments in the lures were made during this period. Poppers, or floating wooden lures that were hooked with artificial feathers and furs, were introduced, giving the sport of bass fishing more and more innovative ways of catching bass. The major change that occurred during this time was probably the effect of stocking largemouth and smallmouth bass due to the damming of small creeks as a result of the expansion of the nation’s railroad system. The increase in the number of bass helped influence the sport of bass fishing.
1932
Roosevelt’s creation of the Tennessee Valley Authority during this period had a major role in the cultivation of different varieties of bass, as the creation of different dams for purposes of harnessing its hydroelectric powers created numerous lakes.
1950’s – 60’s
It is during this time that specific angling tools were developed, such as the fiberglass fishing rod, various artificial lures and baits, nylon fishing lines, and even a device that is designed to locate fish and measure the depth of the water. These devices have made a big improvement on the ability of the bass angler to catch bass and have helped spur the creation of the sport. Also, anglers have begun to use spinning tackles and bait casting instead of the more traditional fixed-spool reels that were used in the late 1800s.
1992
Larry Nixon, the famous angler and fisherman, influenced the development of the sport of bass fishing by winning over one million dollars for it. Right now, bass fishing has contributed over billions and billions of dollars to the U. S. economy.
